Life on a farm is a 365 days a year kind of job, and we can honestly say no two days are the same. When the winter months roll in, our operations here at Yallamundi don’t pause – instead, it’s a time of preparation and stage-setting for what’s to come.
At Yallamundi we combine elements of regenerative farming with modern innovation to deliver the very best outcomes for our land, our animals and the planet itself. At the heart of the regenerative farming methods we’ve adopted is a sense of circularity and restoration, and winter plays a crucial role in that process. It’s a critical time for the land to rest and rejuvenate before the spring warmth returns, and a part of the cycle that’s just as important as any other. Regenerative farming really does mean working in harmony with nature, and listening to what the land’s telling us in each season is an essential element in restoring and respecting the land.
In terms of soil health, winter’s the time we aim to enrich and bolster our soil as much as possible. During the season, we plant cover crops that boost ground fertility, laying the foundation for healthy seasons and generations ahead. Our pasture-raised hens also play an important role. As we move their mobile sheds, their manure naturally fertilises the land they’ve been grazing and exploring, further enhancing soil vitality.
Winter’s also a busy time of the year for planning here on the farm. From our busy biodiversity corridor that teems with life, to the areas on the farm we’ll move our hens to next, we prioritise always taking the time to nourish the land and support our biodiverse ecosystems as much as we can. With plans to take our operations from carbon neutral to carbon positive, we have our sights set on ambitious planting projects that need a huge amount of preparation and careful planning – something we’re extremely passionate about, as it moves us ever closer to our overarching goal.
Winter days may be perceived as being slower on a farm, but they’re anything but here at Yallamundi. Instead it’s an exciting time to take stock, invest in our soil health and prepare for the busy months ahead – working with the seasons and taking cues from Mother Nature herself.
