Here at Yallamundi, we believe that how hens are treated and egg quality are closely connected. When hens are healthy, relaxed and able to behave naturally, the benefits are reflected in the eggs they produce. Prioritising their wellbeing leads to consistent laying, strong shells and eggs that taste great while meeting high quality standards.
Below, we’ll delve deeper into why we’ve prioritised animal welfare since day one, and what impact it has on the eggs in your fridge.
Why space to roam and rest is so important for hens
Hens thrive in environments where they have space to live as nature intended. Hens that are kept in crowded conditions can experience ongoing stress; influencing laying patterns, shell strength and overall health. In contrast, hens with space to roam, access to pasture and consistent daily care tend to be more settled and resilient.
On the farm, our hens are housed at just 750 per hectare and are free to roam during the day. Natural behaviours such as foraging, dust bathing and social interaction, contribute significantly to overall hen health. A well cared for hen that can move freely and interact naturally is more likely to lay eggs with consistent quality over time.
The role of nutrition in producing high quality eggs
Nutrition is also an important part of the picture here at Yallamundi. Hens with access to pasture alongside a balanced diet can benefit from a more varied intake. This can include grasses and insects; with their pecking and scratching also keeping the soil healthy. This behaviour supports wellbeing and contributes to eggs that are valued for their freshness, integrity and taste.
Prioritising our hen’s wellbeing is not just the right thing to do. It also has practical benefits that support better farming outcomes and the eggs that our customers love.
