Sunny-side-up daffodils
These egg carton daffodils are a joyful craft project that kids will love. Made from Yallamundi Farm egg cartons and a few simple materials, they’re a fun and sustainable way to welcome in the change of season while adding a splash of colour indoors.
This is the perfect activity for the next school holidays or a cosy day inside – no garden required! Once made, your daffodils can be arranged as a centrepiece, added to place settings or gifted as handmade surprises.
The Little Green Lesson: Upcycling, no-waste
Materials
- Yallamundi Farm Organic egg cartons
- Scissors
- Paints and paintbrushes (shades of yellow and orange)
- Pipe cleaners (green or any colour you like)
- Metal skewer or pointy tool (for piercing holes).
Method

Cut the base off a Yallamundi egg carton to separate it from the lid. Trim off the pointy tips between the egg cups – these little pyramids will form the centre trumpet of each daffodil. Set them aside.

Cut the egg cups into pairs, then separate them into individual cups to make petals. You’ll need two cups and one pyramid for each flower. Each cup has four sides – cut three of the sides into petal shapes with gentle points, and round off the fourth side near the base. This gives you a cup with three petals and a base that will sit nicely when assembled. Repeat for as many flowers as you’d like to make.

Using sunny yellow and orange paints, coat the inside and outside of all your petal cups and pyramid centres. You can mix shades for variety – real daffodils are full of subtle colour shifts! Let them dry fully.

Take two petal-shaped cups and stack them slightly offset so that all six petals are visible. Place an upside-down pyramid in the centre to form the trumpet of the daffodil.

Use a metal skewer to poke a small hole through the centre of all three pieces. Take a 10cm length of pipe cleaner, twist one end into a small loop and thread the other end through the hole, starting at the inside of the trumpet and pulling through the petals until everything is snug. Twist the stem underneath to secure.

Arrange your daffodils in a bowl or vase, or make a mini bouquet. They’re also perfect for decorating place settings or adding a handmade touch to gifts.
