Little Green Heroes

Spring bulb planters

There’s something special about planting in winter, knowing that in a few months’ time, the garden will begin to bloom. These simple spring bulb planters are a lovely activity for cooler days, turning empty Yallamundi egg cartons into biodegradable planters ready for the garden. Perfect for little hands, this activity encourages children to connect with nature, get outside and learn how everyday materials can be reused in thoughtful and creative ways.

The Little Green Lesson: Upcycling, nature play

Materials

  • Yallamundi egg carton
  • Spring bulbs of your choice  (daffodils, tulips, jonquils, etc)
  • Garden trowel or shovel
  • Soil
  • Watering can or hose

Method

  1. Save your empty Yallamundi egg cartons and cut the lids off so only the base remains.

  2. Place one bulb into each egg cup.

  3. Dig a hole in the garden deep enough so the bulbs will be covered by a few centimetres of soil once planted.

  4. Place the egg cartons directly into the hole and cover gently with soil. Press the soil down lightly and give it a good drink to help everything settle.

  5. Wait patiently for your flowers to bloom!
