Ever wondered what life is like for a pasture-raised hen? While no two days are exactly the same of course, a hen raised on open pastures follows a natural rhythm shaped by daylight, fresh air and plenty of freedom to roam. At Yallamundi Farm, our hens are housed at just 750 per hectare – meaning they spend their days socialising, resting and playing on spacious pastures.
As the sun rises, our hens leave our innovative rotating sheds and begin their day, heading outdoors to forage. Wandering amongst or shady olive groves, they spend their mornings scratching through grass and soil, and pecking at native seeds, insects and plants. This foraging behaviour is instinctive and plays an important role in their physical and mental wellbeing.
Throughout the day, our hens move freely between shaded areas and open pasture. They dust bathe in dry soil to keep their feathers clean and healthy, and perch to rest and socialise with the flock. Hens are naturally social animals and form small groups where they communicate, explore and rest together. We believe happy, healthy hens lay the very best eggs, and our animal welfare experts are always on hand to ensure our hens are well cared for at all times.
Evenings spent in safety and shelter
In the afternoon, our hens often return to laying areas to lay their eggs in quiet, comfortable nesting spaces. As evening approaches, they gradually make their way back to their cosy, safe sheds, where they settle in for the evening. Once the sun sets they rest together in cosy safety, before the sun rises and the day begins once more.
